Labor Day began as a hard-won answer to hard labor. In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the average American worker clocked twelve-hour days, seven days a week, just to keep food on the table. Children as young as five or six stood at machines in mills, factories, and mines, earning pennies compared to their adult counterparts, often in conditions that put life and limb at risk. Out of that exhaustion, labor unions rose up, organizing strikes and rallies to demand something better. On September 5, 1882, ten thousand workers walked off the job in New York City and marched from City Hall to Union Square, unpaid but unwilling to stay silent. That march became the first Labor Day parade in American history. Twelve years later, on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed Labor Day into federal law.
Every Labor Day, we celebrate the achievement that comes after the labor. We rest because we worked. That’s the world’s order—labor first, then rest as the reward. But God’s order runs the other direction. It begins with our salvation. Paul wrote to the Ephesians:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:8-10)
Salvation isn’t the reward at the end of our labor. It’s the gift that comes before the labor even begins. We don’t work to earn rest. We rest first in what Christ has already finished, and then we work out of that rest.
That’s God’s amazing economy, right?
I spent years getting this backwards. I treated my relationship with God like a job performance review, quietly convinced that if I prayed enough, served enough, and produced enough good fruit, I’d finally earn peace and joy. It’s an exhausting way to live! There’s always one more task, one more failure to make up for, and one more reason to feel like I hadn’t done quite enough. God, in His mercy, showed me that I wasn’t working toward acceptance because, through salvation, I already had it.
My work was supposed to flow out of the rest I have in His acceptance!
“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so He gives His beloved sleep.” (Psalm 127:1-2)
How beautiful! “He gives His beloved sleep.” Not because we’ve earned it through anxious striving, but because He is a Father who wants His children to rest, not to labor in vain to build something we will never take with us!
“Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.” (1 Corinthians 3:12-15)
God has great gifts for us—crowns, in fact. Ah, His eternal currency is in the souls of people we bring with us to Heaven!
So this Labor Day, before you celebrate the achievements of the year, ask yourself whether you are laboring alongside God as His workmanship and walking in what He already prepared for you? If you feel like your labor is all for nothing, return to God, my friend. He has good works prepared for you that will bring you great satisfaction!
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)
The work God has for you is not the price of His love—it is the fruit of it!
Prayer:
Teach me to rest in Your finished work and to let my labor flow out of that rest. Build what only You can build in my life—for Your glory. Give me Your peace even in seasons of hard work. Reveal the ways that You have made me Your workmanship and prepare me to walk in Your ways today. I trust You, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
