The Four Lies Satan Told Eve: Do We Still Believe Them Today?

Share

Satan lies

In the Garden of Eden, Satan didn’t barge in with horns and a pitchfork. He slithered in with questions about the trustworthiness of God. My friend, Satan was a cunning liar about God thousands of years ago, and he still is now.

“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said, “You shall not eat of every tree of the garden”?’” Genesis 3:1

Satan’s strategy was simple: plant doubt in Eve’s mind about God’s nature and character. Those same four lies are still being told by our enemy today — in culture, in media, and in our own thoughts — and millions of people are living as if they are true. Let us not be one of them!

1. The Lie: God is not loving.

Satan twisted God’s generous command in Genesis 2:16-17, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,” — into a picture of a stingy, cruel God who withholds good things from His children.

Do people still believe it today? Absolutely. Look at the explosion of “deconstruction” stories on social media. For example, “If God loved me, He wouldn’t have let my child die… my marriage fail… my business collapse.” Atheist bestsellers and viral TikTok videos ask the same question Eve heard: “What kind of loving God allows suffering?” Prosperity-gospel teachings imply God is only loving when life feels good. Millions walk away from faith because they’ve bought the lie that God is holding out on them.

Satan does not EVER want us to know God for Who He says He is because He knows that the day we do is the day we become addicted to His presence. The truth was written in Genesis 2 — God gave Adam and Eve an entire garden of delight and protected them from the one thing that would destroy them. A.W. Tozer wrote, “You’ll never be greater than how you view your God.” A small view of God’s love produces small, anxious lives; an accurate view of God gives us more than we can ask for or imagine.

2. The Lie: God is not truthful

“You will not surely die.” Genesis 3:4. Satan moved from questioning God’s love to outright calling God a liar. Notice he never said “God is a liar” but rather said God’s Word wasn’t a trustworthy source of truth.

Do we still believe it? Every day. Our culture champions “my truth” over absolute truth. Surveys show a growing number of self-identified Christians no longer believe the Bible is fully reliable. People cherry-pick verses that feel nice and dismiss the rest as “outdated.” Progressive theology redefines sin so it no longer offends secular culture. When the culture says, “The Bible can’t possibly mean what it says about sexuality, gender, or judgment,” it is touting the same lie about sin that Eve did: It’s not really sin and it won’t really hurt me.

God’s Word has never changed. Jesus prayed: “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.” ‭‭John‬ ‭17‬:‭17‬-‭19‬  If we treat God’s Word as optional, we are believing the second lie.

3. The Lie: God is not righteous

“You will not surely die.” The third lie was to get Adam and Eve to believe that God had no authority to judge them.  Make no mistake, God is a loving God, but He is also a righteous God who judges by HIS truth and has set forth governing laws to live by. Even many of the laws in the Old Testament provide the foundation of our governing laws today in many countries.  Where would we be without governing right from wrong?  If someone steals your property or murders one of your family members, you want justice, right?

Do we still believe it? We don’t have to look far to see the effects of this lie all around us. For example, Universalism, which teaches “Everyone goes to heaven eventually,” is trending in churches. Additionally, cancel culture demands immediate human-defined justice while simultaneously rejecting the idea that God has the right to define and judge sin. Also, our legal system increasingly drifts from its Biblical foundations of right and wrong. When someone steals, harms, or kills, we cry out for justice on our own human terms while rejecting the righteous Judge who will one day make all things right.

God’s nature is just, loving, and righteous. He “will by no means clear the guilty” unless full payment is made for sin (Exodus 34:7) because love without justice is not love at all. Rejecting God’s authority and ignoring His nature leave us without hope both now and after we die.

4. The Lie: God Is selfish so we must be our own god.

“For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:5 Satan offered Eve self-deification: Become your own god.

Do we still believe it? This may be the most popular lie believed today. New Age spirituality, self-help empires, and “you are enough” slogans flood our social media feeds. Millions live by the mantra: “Just be a good person; it doesn’t matter what you believe.” Humanism teaches we can save ourselves through education, therapy, or moral effort. “Spiritual but not religious” is the fastest-growing identification category for people who want the benefits of God without submitting to Him and His ways. If we can be deceived into  believing that there is no God and no Satan, that there really aren’t good and evil forces at work in this world and that we’ll be alright—we will be eternally robbed. Satan is not neutral, and he hates anything good and is out to destroy you, because you are God’s creation!

The Bible is clear: we are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), called to be like Him in holiness (1 Peter 1:16), but never to be Him. Satan’s promise was a cruel counterfeit. Jesus exposes the truth: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

God’s personal invitation.

Eve believed the lies and plunged humanity into brokenness. But we have a way of escape!

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise… but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

Today the same gracious God invites you to reject every lie and turn to the truth. He is loving. He is truthful. He is righteous. He is gracious and—He proved His love for us on the cross. Today is the day to accept His gift of salvation. And if you are already born again, today is the day to seek to know God for the glorious One He truly is and reject the lies of the enemy. You were born for extraordinary greatness—to know God and glorify Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have believed Satan’s lies. Search my heart and expose every place I have doubted Your love, questioned Your truth, resisted Your righteous authority, or tried to become the own lord of my own life. Thank You for sending Jesus to rescue me from the curse of the Fall. Fill me with Your abundant life and make me a bold witness of Your true nature. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
