Why Does It Seem Like Our Prayers Aren’t Answered?

prayers

Have you ever wondered why some of your prayers seem to move mountains while others seem to hit the ceiling? Not surprisingly, the difference isn’t the eloquence of our words or the emergent nature of our need.

The key lies in the nature of our relationship with God.

When we receive the gift of salvation through faith in Christ, our souls are made righteous by God. We become children of a perfectly righteous Father and are invited to draw near to Him. But like the prodigal son, we often choose to wander into sin, distancing ourselves from the intimacy that fuels our most powerful prayers. Our standing as children doesn’t change, but unconfessed sin hinders the flow of God’s power through our prayers.

God takes sin seriously—after all, it cost Him the life of His Son to reconcile us to Himself.

We should take it seriously as well. For those who earnestly pursue living in God’s righteousness, He promises satisfaction and fulfillment. When we desire to live in the attitudes of Christ, we are so satisfied that sin holds much less of an attraction for us:

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6

My friend, if you are serious about having your prayers answered, ask yourself, “do I daily hunger and thirst after righteousness?” If your answer is “No,” don’t be discouraged because this passion for God’s righteousness is a fire that must be intentionally rekindled each day. Beginning the morning with Bible reading and prayer is essential—it resets our hearts toward God’s presence and keeps us connected to His righteous ways.

This discipline has been one of the most powerful lessons in my life.

The disciplines of daily prayer and Bible reading, intense Bible study, service in a church community, and intentionally sharing the Gospel and teaching others what God is teaching me—are priceless gifts.

God’s righteousness through our salvation did not come cheap, and every area of our lives should gratefully demonstrate the evidence of this priceless gift.

Righteousness isn’t optional for powerful prayer; it’s the dividing line between fervent, effective intercession and weak, powerless words. James 5:16 reminds us:

“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

When our deepest desire is to please God above all else—above self, comfort, or approval—our prayer life transforms. We experience the awe-inspiring presence of God working through us. It’s humbling, exhilarating, and truly addictive to know we have the ear of the Almighty! This access is available to every born-again believer. The passionate pursuit of righteousness is the pursuit of God’s presence. As we draw close to Him, we learn to pray according to His will. And when our requests align with His purposes, we see tangible results.

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” 1 John 5:14-15

As we hide God’s Word in our hearts through reading and memorization, it saturates our minds and naturally shapes our prayers. Praying God’s Word back to Him perfects our prayers because Jesus, Who is perfect, is called “The Word” in John Chapter 1. This elevates our communication with Him. Additionally, the Bible says that the Spirit intercedes, uniting us with the Father and Son in the most powerful circuit in existence.

”Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭26‬-‭27‬

The Trinity enters our prayers when we pray to the Father, in the Word (Jesus), by the intercession of the Spirit!

Wow, right?

God holds all power in the universe—He is the sustaining force behind everything we see and cannot see. No human mind can fully comprehend the magnitude of His omnipotence. Yet, as finite beings, we are given access to His Divine power! When we hunger for God’s presence above anything else, our prayers become conduits of His mighty power.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of righteousness through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Search my heart today, Lord, and reveal any areas where sin has broken intimate communication. Help me to confess, repent, and come into Your Holy presence. Ignite in me a fresh hunger and thirst for Your righteousness, that I may be filled and walk in close fellowship with You. Teach me to pray according to Your will, with fervent, effective prayers that avail much. May Your Word dwell richly in me, shaping every petition I bring before Your throne. Use me powerfully for Your glory as I pursue You above all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
