“Who Told You That You Were Naked?”

“Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.” And He [God] said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭9‬-‭11‬

I’d never considered that the first question God asked Adam after the fall was not “What have you done?” but “Where are you?” and then, pointedly, “Who told you that you were naked?” This struck me as profound. But, of course, why would I expect anything less from God?  😆

Before sin entered the world, Scripture paints a beautiful picture of the innocence of mankind’s intimacy with God:

“And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” Genesis 2:25

Adam and Eve walked in perfect righteousness before God—created in His image, in unbroken fellowship with Him. Their nakedness was no cause for shame because there was no sin to expose. They stood transparent and unashamed in the presence of their holy Creator, clothed only in the righteousness that God Himself had given them as part of their original design.

But then came sin.

They ate the forbidden fruit, and with sin, everything changed. Shame flooded their hearts. For the first time, they saw themselves as exposed, vulnerable, and guilty before a righteous God. Their innate awareness of God’s holiness exposed their sin. Their unrighteousness was revealed in the light of His glory. So they hid from God, sewing fig leaves together to cover themselves and withdrawing from His presence.

But, of course, our loving Heavenly Father came looking for them.

When God asked, “Who told you that you were naked?” He was not gathering information—He already knew. Their sin of disobedience had given them the knowledge of good and evil. What was once pure was stained by the knowledge that they had violated the righteousness of God. Like cockroaches fleeing when light floods a dark room, shame compelled them to hide from their righteous Creator.

We are no different today.

We all have a knowledge of God. (Romans 1) His holiness is clearly evident to us, and we are well aware of our sin. As children we were once naked and unashamed in righteousness. But as our awareness of our sin grows, we become ashamed. Our natural response? Hide. But because we were designed for a relationship with God, our separation creates spiritual anxiety.

In our guilt, we craft modern-day fig leaves. We hide behind achievements, endless busyness, religious routines, social media personas, blame-shifting, and denial. We labor to conceal our transgressions from others, from ourselves, and, we think, from God. Yet the unrighteousness of our soul combined with our innate knowledge of the righteousness of God creates constant spiritual anxiety. My friend, this revelation is not meant to crush us, but it is meant to awaken us to our desperate need for righteousness we cannot produce on our own. We cannot be saved until we know we are lost.

The Gospel is the hope of all humanity.

The Father did not call out to Adam and Eve because He wanted to hurt them; rather, He pursued them to give them the only remedy for their fallen condition. His own Son would pay the ultimate price.

God pursues us still. When our unrighteousness is revealed in His light, it drives home the truth that we cannot cover our sin. Indeed, we need a righteousness that is not our own. Praise God, that Jesus Christ supplies exactly that!

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

Through Christ, God invites us to be clothed in His Son’s perfect righteousness, returning us to a place of unashamed fellowship with Him. Yes, God asked Adam, “Who told you that you were naked?” He may be asking you a similar question about the shame of your own sin. Sin feeds us lies about who we are, about who God is, and about what mighty plans God has for us.

But, my friend, sin and shame do not have to have the final word in our lives!

Jesus is the final authority. If we accept His gift of salvation, we “become the righteousness of God in Him.” And when we live each day making Him the Lord of our lives, we are free to walk transparently. There is no heavier cloak than sin. There is no greater freedom than being clothed with the mind and attitudes of Christ!

Prayer:

Father, search every hidden corner of my heart. Forgive me for hiding from You. Thank You that Your righteousness still reveals my need—not to destroy me, but to draw me back to Your presence. Help me walk in the light of Your presence and the freedom of unashamed communion with You. Remove this burden of shame and restore the joy of my salvation. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
