Perceiving God’s Presence: How Thankfulness Produces Powerful Intimacy

Share

God's presence thankfulness

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” James 1:17

God’s presence is not governed by our perception. He is always near, always at work—whether we sense Him vividly or feel nothing at all. Our emotions and circumstances shift like clouds across the sky, but His reality remains steady and constant. Just as the sun continues to shine brightly above the clouds even when we cannot see its light or feel its warmth, God’s presence endures unchanging. The clouds of doubt, trial, or distraction may obscure our view, but they do not dim or remove the sun itself. In the same way, our feelings of distance do not alter God’s nearness—He is there, unchanging and faithful.

How do we know this?

Well, if the Bible is our source of truth—instead of our own opinion or some other source—we can know God for who He says He is. God’s nature is eternally just, loving, and righteous.

“But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord. Jeremiah 9:24

His character is dependable. He is omniscient (all-knowing),
omnipotent (all-powerful), omnipresent (everywhere), and everlasting:

“Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.” Jeremiah 32:17

“Am I a God near at hand,” says the Lord, “And not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him?” says the Lord; “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord. Jeremiah 23:23-24

“The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: ‘Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.’” Jeremiah 31:3

This is God; and it’s immeasurably comforting that no amount of darkness can change who He is!

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8

“God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5

God is never in the dark; in fact, He is the unquenchable source of all light.

The born again believer’s perception of God can never be altered by circumstances; it’s only altered by the degree of darkness we allow to influence our heart and mind.

Imagine a child who lives in the same home as a loving parent. The parent provides everything good—food, shelter, guidance, affection, and protection—yet the child chooses to sneak around, disobey the rules, and live in open opposition. The child forms distorted opinions, stirs up storms of conflict and chaos, and then complains that the parent seems distant, uncaring, or absent. All the while, the loving parent is right there in the house, still offering the very best, still ready to restore, forgive, and bless. The child’s rebellion doesn’t change the parent’s presence or love; it only blinds the child to the benefits already available and wastes the riches of that nearness.

In the same way, when we are God’s born again children yet choose to walk in disobedience or pride, we create our own storms and wrongly conclude that God is far away. Yet He has never left. His presence is constant. But when we live in loving obedience, our perception is enlightened. We begin to see more and more in—ALL circumstances from God’s perspective. That doesn’t mean we always know all the reasons. But we have the confidence that we will someday. Our awareness of God’s presence enlightens us and grows a greater sense of thankfulness within us.

A thankful heart captivates God’s attention.

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!” Psalm 100:4

The “gates” represent the outer entrance to God’s dwelling place, and the “courts” represent going deeper into His presence. Thanksgiving is presented as the pathway or key to approaching God—starting worship with gratitude invites us into communion with Him rather than coming first with our demands or complaints. It acknowledges His lordship and goodness first, positioning our hearts to experience intimacy.

We cultivate this growing awareness through daily disciplines:

  1. consistent prayer that keeps us in communion with Him;
  2. daily study of God’s Word that renews our minds and reveals His truths;
  3. fellowship with other believers that sharpens and encourages us;
  4. faithful commitment to a local church for worship and accountability, and
  5. active teaching, evangelism, and service that puts His truth into practice.

These disciplines train us to live according to His will instead of our own and thus, lead us further into His presence. This is His promise:

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8

God’s presence is constant; but our awareness of Him grows as we thankfully humble ourselves and walk in obedience to His will.

Prayer:

Father, thank You that Your presence never depends on my feelings or circumstances. You are just, loving, righteous, all-knowing, all-powerful, everywhere present, and everlasting—unchanging forever. Forgive me when pride or disobedience blinds me and causes me to waste the riches of Your nearness. Help me humble myself daily through prayer, Your Word, fellowship, church commitment, teaching, and sharing the Gospel. Enlighten my perception so I see You more clearly and walk in joyful obedience. May I rest securely in Your constant presence and abundant grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
