The Only Purpose That Truly Makes Life Matter

Share

purpose life matter

For many years, I tried to find purpose and value the same way most people do—by improving myself, building relationships, pursuing self-improvement goals, and even trying to make a difference for others. These are not unwholesome pursuits, but before I accepted Christ as my Savior, they never satisfied me like they do now. Even as a born again believer, I’ve often found myself deviating from the true North and losing my sense of Divine purpose.

King Solomon, who possessed more wisdom, wealth, and success than any of us will ever know, despite all God had blessed him with, wrote,

“All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 1:8–9

Solomon had everything the world promised would bring him fulfillment, yet he discovered that pleasure, accomplishment, and riches—without God—cannot give lasting meaning. Why?

Because we were not created merely to exist for our own pleasure; we were created for a divine purpose—to know God and to glorify Him.

The Bible teaches that life only finds its true center—in Christ.

“For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible…all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:16–17

These verses reveal a stunning truth: we were made by Christ, for Christ, and our lives only make sense when they revolve around Him. When we try to build a life apart from God, we are living outside the very purpose for which we were designed.

Before I was born again, I lived with an emptiness I could not explain. But when Christ saved me, He gave me something I had never known—eternal purpose.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

But sin destroys everything good. The worst part is that it separates us from having a sense of the presence of God. When we invite Jesus onto the throne of our hearts—we are restored to what was lost because of sin. Tim Keller captured this beautifully when he wrote: “On the cross Jesus Christ got life without God so we could—have life with God. He was putting himself into our lives—our misery, our mortality—so we could be brought into his life, His joy, and immortality.” (Making Sense of God)

Christ took our emptiness so we could receive His fullness; He took our otherwise meaningless existence and gave it everlasting purpose.

Jesus promised:

“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

The abundant life God offers is not about possessions or success; it is about knowing Him. This is where true prosperity begins. When we walk with Christ, even ordinary days are filled with eternal significance.

Our lifes are only worthwhile when Christ is IN them and Lord OF them.

When God is the center of our thoughts, words, and deeds, His pleasure is the motivation for all we do. Our lives are never meaningless when Jesus is on the throne of our hearts. We have a new Master for our motivation. We are not slaves of temporary applause or fading achievements. We are beloved children living for the glory of the One who made us. This verse is one of my life verses:

“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

If you are searching for purpose, the answer is not a new goal, a new relationship, or a new accomplishment. The answer is a Person. “Meaning” is not something we create; it is something we receive when we come to know the God who created us. In Him, every encounter, every blessing, every trial, and every experience in our human story becomes an opportunity to bring God glory.

A masterpiece shines brightest when it glorifies the Master.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You that my life is not an accident and my days are not meaningless. Thank You for creating me with a purpose and for giving me new life through Jesus Christ. Forgive me for the times I have tried to find significance apart from You. Help me to live each day with the awareness that I was made for Your glory. Fill my heart with the joy and meaning that come from knowing You well. Guide my steps so that everything I do reflects Your purpose for my life. Thank You that in Christ my life can matter—now and for eternity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
