“They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing.” Psalm 92:14
National Geographic recently featured research on “superagers” —people in their 80s and beyond whose memory and mental sharpness rival those of people decades younger. Scientists have spent over 25 years studying their brains and lives, and they’ve found something remarkable: superagers aren’t just lucky; they live differently.
Brain scans show their minds physically shrink more slowly than most. They have an abundance of special brain cells tied to empathy, decision-making, and connection. But the single personality trait superagers shared wasn’t a perfect diet or peak physical health — it was gregariousness. They live deeply connected lives, build strong relationships, keep learning, and stay engaged in meaningful work or service.
This study has amazing spiritual parallels!
As I read this article, I thought about God’s design for humanity and His Divine plan for His people. Scripture is full of calls to be in community, to love one another, to encourage each other daily, and to bear one another’s burdens. God never meant for us to grow old in isolation—physically or spiritually.
Spiritually speaking, we can also become “superagers.” Those who walk closely with God for decades often shine with a joy and stability that younger believers long for. My parents are this way. They are rooted in His Word, resilient in trials, and radiant in love for others. They are “spiritual superagers”.
This is how I want to age—don’t you???
But my friend, here’s the warning—even born-again believers who neglect their relationship with God can dull their sense of His presence. Over time, it leaves them restless, anxious, and unmoored. The slow drift from daily fellowship with the Lord is the spiritual equivalent of brain shrinkage—making us less aware of His leading and less fruitful in our latter years.
The “superager” life isn’t just about adding years — it’s about adding life to your years.
God’s presence adds life to our years. He invites us to participate in His blessings through a daily walk with Him, active love for others, and living with Divine Purpose—something bigger than ourselves.
The superager lifestyle God prescribes is not a secret—it comes right from His Word:
- Being born again. It all begins here. This is the source of our eternal fountain of life.
- Staying relationally connected through membership in a Bible-believing church.
“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24–25
- Learning, praying, and intentionally building our relationship with God.
- Living our Divine purpose NOW by teaching others—what Christ called making disciples.
- Moving our body, eating healthily, and creating an example of balance for those we are influencing spiritually.
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19–20
- Guarding our heart and mind daily against the enemy.
“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23
My friend, when we become gregarious in our relationship with God, the absolute and 100% guaranteed result is—He produces the fruit of His Spirit within us!
Our life becomes ageless and fruitful when we are fully connected to the Vine.
Reflection Thought:
If someone studied my life for the next 20 years, would they find the habits of a spiritual “superager?” If they did—it will be because they saw more of Jesus and less of me.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of life—every breath, every day, every year. Please fill me with Your presence. Make my soul more gregariously engaged with the souls around me so I can give them Your love, joy, peace, wisdom, and strength. Keep my heart tender toward Your presence and my mind sharp in Your Word. Help me to live connected, joyful, and purpose-filled, so that for whatever years I have left, I may bear eternal fruit for Your glory! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
