When My Choices Make Me Poor

About fifty percent of my law practice involves estate planning. It’s always interesting how a client will tell me they “don’t have much,” but when we get all their assets on paper, they realize that their estate value is actually much higher than they realized.

Likewise, if you belong to The King of Kings, you are enviably rich but—are you living as if you are poor and needy?

Our impoverished thinking finds its root in—valuing what is WORTH LESS—the MOST. When we place exceeding great value in temporal or frail things then—we NEVER have enough. Thus, we always feel poor. Everything on this earth except the souls of people—will return to dust.

I very, very, often have to call myself out—for valuing dirt over gold!

You see, when I begin to feel needy in any area of my life; meaning—I’m stressed out—then I KNOW I’m living like I’m poor. Whether it’s a business deal, a relationship, finances, a staffing need, falling behind in my work, loneliness, etc.—whatever is stressing me—it’s like a flashing red and blue light! I know it’s time to pull off the interstate and arrest my own soul. I need to re-order my loves and remind myself where the gold is stored.

When I declutter my heart, I remember that my greatest treasure is the relationship God has given me with Himself.

God never feels needy because HE is the eternal self-existing one; and—He created me with ONE primary need—to know Him. Everything else is secondary. When I clutter up the throne of my heart with these lesser things, of course, I live like I’m poor—because I am starving myself from what I need most—GOD! The Bible says:

“Charge them that are rich in this world [arguably each person reading this devotional—especially anyone living in a developed country], that they be not highminded, nor trust in UNCERTAIN riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”

1 Timothy‬ ‭6:17-19

When, through the gift of salvation, we possess the gift of everlasting life, we “lay hold” on that gift by—sharing the richness of our relationship with God—with others.
