What Is The Greatest Enemy of A Nation?

Did you know that the greatest enemy of any free nation is not ISIS, Hamas, Hezbollah, Nazism, Imperialism, etc.? Rather, it is the great deception that we can maintain maximum freedom while also living independently from God. To be secure as a nation, our greatest security must be in God—not money, power, or military might.

Biblical history has proven this point. For example, the Egyptians believed their world-class military could easily recapture the million or so unarmed Israeli slaves straggling along in the desert. But God destroyed the entire army in the depths of the Red Sea. (Exodus 14) Similarly, the mighty Syrian army thought they could take lone unarmed Elisha captive. But the Lord blinded every last one of them and Elisha led them like babies right into the city of their enemy. (2 Kings 6) There are countless examples of how God used the “weak” of this world to bring the “strong” to their knees. God never needs money, bombs or bullets to defeat His enemies. He is consistently victorious fighting for the underdog when that nation or person is living in faithful obedience to Him.

He still does!

God desires to fight with us—not against us. But humanity has been striving to be independent from God since the beginning. Eve believed her life could be better without God so she chose to disobey Him. (Genesis 3:1-7) She chose the false promises of her enemy. She was deceived. Our enemies will never defeat God.

And if we live without God, we will ALWAYS lose.

When we choose to live against God’s ways, we have chosen to live in opposition to Him. And when the majority of an entire nation chooses to collectively reject God and His ways—it is a sure recipe for national destruction. How can we expect to have the protection of God’s strength when we are conspiring with His enemies? Would a parent protect a child who aligns themself with criminals who plan to rob the home, destroy the family, burn the house down, and kill those who want to love and protect her? I think the greater question is “why would this child EVER choose to align themself with the people who want to wreak havoc on all that is good in their life?

Well, I believe it is the same reason that we don’t passionately and consistently align ourselves with the God who died for us. We have either forgotten who God is, or we’ve never known Him for who He is and have not experienced His glorious presence.

This was so true for me.

You see after I was born again, I didn’t seek to grow a genuine relationship with Him. I believed the lies of my enemies that—God was not good, He had terrible plans for me and my way was better. I needed to grow to know God for who God is. My friend, don’t let the enemy deceive you either! We live and breathe only because of HIM. All of the goodness we enjoy comes from Him. The Bible says:

“God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.

And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should SEEK the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is NOT far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’

Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought NOT to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.”

Acts 17:24-29 NKJV

All goodness comes from God. We are created in His image. We don’t exist without Him. Our nation does not exist without Him. It follows that we cannot hope to maintain either personal or national freedom—without Him. The Old Testament is replete with example after example of the rise and fall of Israel because they failed to make God their center. Every time they worshiped false gods—they were conquered and enslaved by their enemies. We don’t have to live this way!

The false gods of today are anything or anyone we love more than we love God.

If any nation is to have great prosperity and freedom to worship God, the people must make HIM their center of worship. He must be more central to our life than making money, seeking pleasure, attaining position, indeed—even more than friendships and family. When His will and His presence are our passion, He gives us all these other blessings—in spades. Only God can give us great satisfaction; our enemies cannot.

Can you imagine what this world would look like if even half of the population was passionately seeking God, the giver of love, joy, peace, goodness, kindness, meekness, gentleness, compassion, wisdom, and strength?

To be close to God, we must DAILY SEEK to know Him. When we seek to know God’s ways and obey Him—His strength, wisdom and love pour into our life. The Spirit of wisdom speaks through our lips. My friend, the obedient heart of even one person can preserve freedom for an entire nation. Remember how Moses interceded for Israel when God was going to destroy the entire nation and start over? (Exodus 32)

You and I can secure freedom for our people because when we work together with God as our center—we are an unstoppable force!
