What Are the Great Secrets to Contentment?

Share

contentment

In a world that constantly pushes us toward more—more money, more possessions, more success—lasting contentment often feels elusive. Yet the apostle Paul, writing from a Roman prison, wrote that he had discovered the secret:

“Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:11-13

Paul’s contentment wasn’t tied to his circumstances but to deep biblical truths. Two thousand years later, these truths have not changed. We can have Biblical contentment—just like Paul did in a Roman prison.

This devotional was inspired by a sermon by Lon Solomon. He said that Biblical contentment is an ATTITUDE sustained by three foundational truths. It is so powerful, I wanted to share it with you. If we fail to embrace these attitudes, we’ll chase endless dissatisfaction. But if we believe them wholeheartedly, we’ll experience genuine peace and satisfaction—regardless of our circumstances. So let’s examine these three truths.

1. God is in control

First, we must ACTIVELY BELIEVE that God is in absolute control of every area of our lives, including our finances and resources. Every bit of wealth or provision we possess comes directly from Him. The Bible says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.” (Psalm 24:1)  He sovereignly distributes according to His wisdom. Greed—the relentless desire for more—is the enemy of contentment because it denies God’s lordship, convincing us we must grasp and hoard to feel secure.

In contrast, when we actively believe that every asset and every minute of time is in God’s control—then we are released from the slavery of control. As we do we become more thankful for not having to be in control. God’s presence fills us with His love; which is selflessness. We cannot be simultaneously greedy AND selfless.

We don’t need more of anything except God’s presence because He is our best possession.

 2. God gives us what we need.

Second, we must ACTIVELY BELIEVE that God always gives us exactly what He believes is best for us at any given moment in our life. “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.” (Psalm 84:11)  If we think we lack, it’s not because God is stingy but because, in His perfect knowledge of our lives, He knows this is all we can faithfully handle right now.

More resources without spiritual maturity can lead to pride, distraction, or harm as warned in 1 Timothy 6:9-10: “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Contentment means we actively believe that God’s “no” or “not yet” is rooted in His love and wisdom, protecting and preparing us so we can do the work He has set forth for us today. Too much can distract us from God’s purpose. When I start losing my sense of contentment, it’s usually because I’ve stopped actively believing that God has already given me exactly what I need for now.

3. God is what we need most.

Third, we must ACTIVELY BELIEVE that real security in life is found in our strongest relationship with Jesus Christ. We often love money because it promises security—protection from uncertainty and provision in crisis. But money cannot prevent death, illness, or loss. In trials like major surgery, the death of a loved one, or a devastating accident, we truly NEED Jesus, not a bank account or a big house. Paul commanded Timothy, “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in UNCERTAIN riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.” (1 Timothy 6:17).

True contentment rests in Christ, who strengthens us through ANY season.

My friend, Paul’s famous statement in the Book of Philippians from a first century prison cell—“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”—is a promise of supernatural strength whether he found himself in abundance or need. He ACTIVELY LIVED in this attitude because he knew his greatest security was grounded in the only thing he would never lose—his relationship with God.

“Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.” 1 Timothy‬ ‭6‬:‭6‬-‭8‬ ‭

Whenever I start to lose my sense of contentment and start worrying about some area of my life where I think I need more—I must redirect my brain back to these principles.

1. God is in control.

2. God gives me what I need.

3. God is what I need most.

As we actively seek to embrace each of these truths daily—absolute contentment becomes our steady reality.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the secret of contentment revealed through Your servant Paul. Remind me daily that You are in absolute control, that You give me what is best, and that I don’t need more when I have You. Ground my mind in the fact that my greatest contentment is found in You alone, Lord. Strengthen me to be content in every circumstance so I can say with all confidence that, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” May my life reflect trust in You, overflowing with peace and joy so others see my contentment and desire to know You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
