There are fragrances that provoke pleasantness and anticipation in each of us. For me, it’s the scent of things like—wild roses in the woods, sunshine in line-dried sheets, fresh, hot apple pie, the ocean breeze, and evergreens in the high county. It’s a great mystery how fragrances penetrate our minds and draw us into the moment—but they do!
Did you know that when we belong to Christ, we are supposed to also be like a pleasant fragrance and draw others into Him?
The Bible says:
“But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”
2 Corinthians 2:14-15
What is the essence that emanates from YOUR life?
Is it the love and presence of God? When we are born again in Christ, we have a choice to either be stinky or is it sweet. When we fill our life with the stink of the enemy, it hides the sweetness of the presence of God—much like a skunk spraying a wild rose. But when we fill our soul with His presence, we are a fragrance much like home. Our life make the lives of others so much better. Like the fragrances we all appreciate more than we understand, God’s presence blesses our life and the lives of others beyond our comprehension.
Just to drive this point home, think about why you bathe and make sure you smell good before going on a date. Or, why do you clean your home and ensure it smells pleasantly before company arrives? You might take this pleasant atmosphere for granted but I guarantee you wouldn’t if your date smelled like body odor or you home smelled like dirty diapers!
Isn’t the aroma of our eternal soul, and the influence we have for Christ of far greater importance?
When we allow God’s presence to continually fill us, we are like a beautiful fragrance, which permeates peoples souls and draws them to their Savior.
