I spend as much time as I can hiking, because the beauty of Creation is a powerful force that God uses to nourish my soul. Who among us is not captivated by beauty? Beauty enters our soul through our five senses and inspires action and emotion. God intended for beauty to speak, invite, inspire, comfort, nourish, and ultimately draw us into His unimaginably beautiful presence. The Psalmist wrote:
“Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, You are very great: You are clothed with honor and majesty, Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain.
O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions—This great and wide sea, in which are innumerable teeming things, living things both small and great. There the ships sail about; there is that Leviathan which You have made to play there.
These all wait for You, that You may give them their food in due season. What You give them they gather in; You open Your hand, they are filled with good. You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; and You renew the face of the earth.
May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works. He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the hills, and they smoke.
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. May my meditation be sweet to Him; I will be glad in the Lord.”
Psalms 104:1-2, 24-34
The very essence of who God made us is to reflect the characteristics of His nature and the fruits of His Spirit. Thus, because we are all created in His image—we can ALL be beautiful. This isn’t about lifting weights or having plastic surgery. The man whose muscles bulge out of his shirt but who has an empty soul does not invite—he “intimidates.” The woman with flawless skin and a perfect figure but whose heart is constantly craving attention and dares us to compete—does not invite our soul to be nourished.
God’s beauty runs deeper and is priceless.
When we are born again, and we allow God to peel back all the layers of scarring in our soul, He uncovers HIS beauty that He created within us. He nourishes and develops our soul in the strength and beauty of His presence. God is majestically beautiful. The Creator is far more beautiful than His Creation:
“For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.”
(Psalms 96:5-6)
From the sanctuary of God, our soul finds rest. He endows us with His strength and beauty which will flow from us long after the decline of physical strength and outward beauty. Invite Him in. Fall in love. Fall into rest. Find peace. He is waiting right outside the door of your heart.
In God’s presence our soul becomes a place of strength and beauty.
