When watching the news or social media, my heart is often filled with despair over the level of darkness in the world. I wonder, what can only one person do to make a difference and push back the walls of darkness? Oh, my friend, I’ve never been so grateful for the guiding presence of God in my life! He is my comfort. His Word is my light. He loves us all so much—including those lost in darkness!
He is faithful to remind me that this darkness comes from the prince of darkness and from those who are slaves to his ways.
Darkness NEVER comes from light. Light is more powerful than darkness because when light is present in the darkness, the darkness must yield. When we are born again, the light of Jesus lives IN us. Jesus didn’t just say that we CAN be the light; He COMMANDED us to BE the light:
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16
Jesus not only called us to be light, He also gave us the POWER to be light. There is no darkness that can defeat Him. HE is the light; and if He is in us—we WILL shine! Jesus said:
“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall NOT walk in darkness, but HAVE the LIGHT of life.”
John 8:12
CHRIST is the LIGHT of LIFE! If we are “following Christ,” we are NEVER powerless—no matter how great the darkness. Even a tiny pin light in a pitch black cave will be seen by all in the cave. So when the darkness seems to be overwhelming us, WE CAN DO SOMETHING POWERFUL! We can let the light of Christ shine more brightly through our life. The darker the darkness, the brighter the light.
This present darkness is an opportunity for each of us to shine the light of Christ.
So, HOW do we SHINE the LIGHT of Christ? Well, to “follow Christ” is to obey His Word. Jesus summed up obedience to the entire law:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind…[and]…love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 22:37-40
When God is the center of our life, HE RULES our life and we live out the law of loving others. Love is contagious. It gives hope. Love is light amidst the darkness of hate. In the end—love wins!
How do we know this is true?
Because God IS love and HE always wins! His love conquered death and even the FEAR of death.
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John 4:18)
When we allow God’s presence to transform us, we become a powerful light of LOVE and TRUTH that draws others to God’s love. Only HE has the power to conquer the darkness. God’s love is compelling. It draws people into HIS presence. We CAN do something powerful—we can be more like Jesus who was the most powerful light to ever walk in the darkness of this world.
God’s presence in our life is the light that drives out darkness!

I love God so much! He has helped me in my physical disabilities and emotional! My problem is telling others about God! I don’t drive and have no friends where I live!
