I was visiting my sister and her family in Houston for the weekend and while at her church, a lady came up to me and said:
“I want to thank you because you are the reason my family and I got saved.”
I had no recollection of leading her to Christ, so I asked her to explain. She said: “Years ago I was interviewing for a job at your office, and in the course of the interview, it came up that I was also looking for a daycare. You suggested I put my children in your church school. The only thing I heard was—it was cheaper than daycare. So we enrolled our children, and started attending your church. I would have otherwise never gone to a church like yours. But—through the ministry of the church—my whole family came to know Christ as our Lord and Savior!”
Her story was one of those moments that stopped me in my tracks and made me think of just how eternally profound every part of our day can be—in God’s eternal plan!
God used me to plant a seed even though I didn’t know about the great tree that would grow from it.
Once the seed had been planted, the church and school ministry watered and cultivated it by teaching and loving her children which–in turn, drew the souls of both the parents to Christ. We are a team and WE ALL have a critical role in the Great Commission of Christ. Each seed we plant matters. Whether it’s a casual aside in a job interview, or a direct-soul-targeting conversation—God’s Word and His Presence are—equally powerful in both situations.
When and where we plant the seeds God gives us must be directed by His Spirit. When we are tuned into Him, sowing becomes second nature. We do it because it matters. When we love God—it matters to us because—it matters to Him. Jesus taught:
“A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold.” (Luke 8:5-7)
Jesus said that we have been given the ability to know “the mysteries of the kingdom of God,” and that this Heavenly knowledge is multiplied when we plant in good ground. (Luke 8:10) Jesus explained:
“The seed is the word of God. Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.” (Luke 8:11-15)
Never miss an opportunity to sow the good seed of God—for you never know where a mighty oak will grow!
