As I begin 2022, I’ve been overwhelmed by the feeling that my life is not really making a difference. People’s problems seem too big for me. I’m tired. I don’t want to work so hard to—teach people who “don’t have time” to learn about God; run a successful law practice when I can’t find enough help; love on other people’s children while they get high and destroy themselves; and the list goes on. Nothing I’m doing seems significant at all so—can’t I just rest? And to top it all off—I feel ashamed for feeling tired!!!
What kind of Christian am I, anyway???
The fact is I’m just the kind of person God wants. I’m helpless without HIM and—I know it. (Although I do have memory lapses when things are going great!) The desire to live independent from God was the original sin in the Garden of Eden. It’s the sin that cast Lucifer from Heaven. It’s the sin that makes us think we don’t need God. But the Bible is clear that God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. (James 4:6)
My dear friend, the struggle is not in the problems around us—it is in our heart.
When I cry out, “Lord I need You,” that is exactly where I need to be to find all the help I need.
Even now, as that prayer is in my heart, God reminds me of how special I am to Him and how well He cares for me:
“Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant, and praise is beautiful. He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. The Lord lifts up the humble; He casts the wicked down to the ground. Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; Sing praises on the harp to our God, Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who prepares rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountains. He gives to the beast its food, And to the young ravens that cry. He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy.”
Psalms 147:1, 3-11
If you feel like you are overwhelmed, that’s okay. In fact, it’s perfect. Give it all to God. He will guide you like a Shepherd. He will honor you like royalty. He will bless you with peace the world does not understand. He will bring healing and satisfaction to your soul.
God’s work isn’t done in OUR strength; instead, when we humble our heart, we’re given supernatural power beyond our own might or imagination!
