Someone asked me how I hear God speak to me. I found it surprisingly easy to explain—not because I’m a pariah of the Bible (I’m certainly not) but—because it’s what I’m experiencing with God. It’s very easy to talk about something that’s happened to you—because you’re telling your story instead of getting technical. The way God speaks to me is as varied as the people I talk with everyday!
God speaks to me through His Word, through Creation, through other believers, my circumstances, music, prayer and through His Spirit.
Jesus said:
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.”
John 10:27-30
When our spirit is born into God’s family, we are made ALIVE spiritually and we’re enabled to hear God, who is a spirit, speak to us. Who does do NOT hear God? Jesus said:
“I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you.”
John 10:25-26
To believe in Jesus, is not just to believe He exists (even the devils believe He exists). Rather, it is believing in Him to the point you surrender your whole life to Him—not just for your salvation, but also surrendering to His Lordship. It’s like saying “I do” at the altar to your beloved—you are swearing allegiance to Him as the Lord of your heart and life. Then, you belong to Him—just like a sheep belongs to the shepherd. Although you may wander, you can never lose the family connection, that is, no one can snatch you out of His hand, because you have new spiritual genetics. You being living close to Him in His “Spirit of Truth.” Jesus said:
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You KNOW Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
John 14:16-17
As we make an intentional efforts to know Him, He develops in us a greater awareness about Himself. We learn to listen for the familiar sound of His voice. We learn to see Him in Creation. He personalizes the message of His Word and—it becomes our love letter. In good or bad circumstances, we see His hand all in it.
When my whole heart belongs to God, then like a child who calls out for her father in a dark crowded space, I know His voice when I hear it and—it draws me to Him.
Hearing God’s voice is like coming home—your soul knows when you’re there!
