Going Without God’s Presence?

“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.” -Moses from Exodus 33:15

Israel witnessed ten supernatural plagues, the splitting of the Red Sea, a pillar of fire and cloud to guide and protect them, and daily manna from heaven—and yet—within three months, they turned to idolatry and demanded that the priest Aaron build them a god they could see. He built a golden calf. This distorted image of the living God was made from a symbol of one of Egypt’s false gods. And then, we see Aaron, the high priest, in Exodus 32:4, proclaiming, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt,” thus crediting an IDOL with the deliverance the Lord had accomplished. Exodus 33 unfolds immediately after Moses came down from Mount Sinai and discovers this scene of idolatry.

Moses is furious.

So is God.

Yet, Moses intercedes for Israel and God spares the nation from total destruction. But the relationship between God and Israel is fractured. God presents Israel with a sobering choice—to enter the promised land without His presence. He tells Moses to lead the people toward the land He swore to give their fathers, promising protection and victory through an angel—yet declaring that He would not go with them lest His holiness consume a stiff-necked people. Exodus 33:1–3

The people immediately grasp the gravity of what is being offered. Instead of celebrating, they mourn. They remove their ornaments and humble themselves, realizing that a land flowing with milk and honey would be meaningless without the Lord being with them. Exodus 33:4–6

They recognized that prosperity without God’s presence is not a blessing—it is a loss.

Moses called for repentance. He moved the meeting tent outside the camp, creating a visible reminder that sin had disrupted fellowship with God. Anyone who desired to seek the Lord had to go outside the camp to meet Him (Exodus 33:7). Yet even there, God continued to meet with Moses, speaking with him “face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” Exodus 33:11

It is in this setting that Moses reveals his deep need for God:

“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.” Exodus 33:15

Moses would rather continue to wander in the wilderness with God and with a million stubborn complaining people than go into the Promised Land—without Him.

Moses understood that Israel’s identity, protection, and future were not secured by land or success—but by God Himself. Progress without God was not progress at all. God responds with mercy, promising, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)

Later in Israel’s history, at Kadesh Barnea, Israel attempted to go up and take the Promised Land without God’s presence—claiming the promise while disregarding His command. Moses warned them plainly, “The Lord is not among you.” (Numbers 14:42) They went anyway, and were defeated. God’s promises were never meant to be separated from God’s presence.

The presence of God as longed for in Exodus 33 is fully realized in Jesus Christ.

The Bible proclaims: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Jesus is Emmanuel—God with us. (Matthew 1:23) Because of Jesus, God no longer dwells outside our camp. When we are born again, He dwells in us. That is why Moses’ question still confronts us today—with even greater weight: Where are we going, and are we going there with God? We can pursue success, ministry, relationships, and even God’s promises—yet functionally leave Him out of the center of our life.

And anything we do without God, even good things, places us somewhere we were never meant to be.

“If the Lord does not build the house, they labor in vain who build it.” Psalm 127:1

Reflection Question:

Is there any place you go—in your thoughts, words, or deeds—where God is not the center?

Prayer:

Thank You for being a God who desires to dwell with Your people. Forgive me for the times I have chased outcomes instead of Your presence, or claimed Your promises without waiting on You. I do not want progress, success, or even ministry—without You. Re-center my heart, reorder my steps, and teach me to walk in dependence on You. If Your presence does not go with me, I do not want to go at all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
