Experience The Incomparable Value of a Healthy Relationship with God

A healthy relationship with God brings incomparable and immeasurable value to our lives, far surpassing mere provision for our basic needs. This truth became evident to me when a dear friend, who had lost her mother to cancer, expressed her heartfelt longing, saying, “I’d trade anything to have my mother walk through my front door again.” It wasn’t her mother’s material provisions she missed, but rather the irreplaceable bond forged through care, compassion, and selfless love. It was the relationship that held the greatest significance.

Yet, the relationship we share with our Heavenly Father surpasses any earthly connection. He selflessly cares for us and loves us in ways that exceed the capabilities of any parent or friend. Similar to our earthly relationships, when we dedicate time and effort to cultivating a healthy relationship with God, we not only treasure the closeness we experience, but also desire its continual growth and deepening.

Have you experienced this profound relationship with God?

I, for the first 20 years of my Christian life, had not. My relationship with God was driven by guilt rather than inspired by love. I engaged in acts of kindness and made conscious efforts to avoid sin, hoping that God would bless me with worldly possessions and grant me my desired answers to prayer. I neglected the simple joy of spending time talking with Him and delighting in His presence.

What a wasted opportunity for an extraordinary friendship!

Even before we are born again, we receive the most fundamental gifts from God—like life and basic sustenance. However, much like infants who lack awareness, we often overlook or fail to appreciate these blessings. In our childhood, we might have taken our parents for granted, and similarly, we can sometimes exhibit a similar attitude towards God. But as we mature and gain a deeper understanding of the immeasurable value of a relationship with God, our yearning for that intimate RELATIONSHIP intensifies. Moreover, it brings immense comfort to know that distance, disease, or death cannot sever our bond with Him.

The Bible makes our security as believers ABUNDANTLY clear:

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?”‬

Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭31‬-‭35

My friend, when you experience transformative rebirth through the gift of salvation, you are endowed with the spiritual genetics of Christ, which establishes an unbreakable bond with God. This bond, akin to the genetic connection you share with your parents, is secure and everlasting. However, the depth and intimacy of the relationship you experience with God depends on something entirely distinct—the active interaction between you and Him. In order to nurture and cultivate a healthy relationship, we must engage with God, we must acknowledge that He is holy and righteous.

“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

‭‭I John‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬-‭7‬ ‬‬

Therefore, to intimately interact with God, we cannot walk in the darkness of disobedience. Our obedience becomes the tangible expression of our love for Him as well as our desire to draw closer to Him. Just as a loving child honors their parents by obediently following their guidance; we demonstrate our love for God through obedience to His commandments. Let us remember that the spiritual bond we share with God is unbreakable, but the depth and richness of our relationship are determined by our active participation, obedience, and devotion.

May God’s love for us fuel our desire to seek His presence and walk in the light of His truth!
