Humans have a deep desire to be loved unconditionally. We were designed to need love, but so often we run from the best source. God loves us like no other, but we are often afraid to draw close to Him. His righteousness scares us because we don’t think we can measure up. We believe we can find perfect love without God so we seek to find love in those who are not equipped to love us perfectly. But only God is perfectly ethical, good, honest, honorable, moral, true, upright and virtuous AND able to love us perfectly.
Can we find perfect love in another person who struggles with the same sins we do?
That is, do we honestly believe someone who is even just a little bit dishonest, dishonorable, evil, immoral, indecent, unethical, needy, desperate, depressed, etc.—is really equipped to truly love us?
Yet, if you are like me, you still fall into the trap of desperately searching for perfect love—outside of God.
But, my friend, God has a plan to love you. GOD is LOVE and when we know Him—we know pure love. (1 John 4:7-8) When we are born again, our inner man is given the righteousness of Christ. But for us to dwell in the presence of God while we walk in this sinful world, we must choose to live in righteousness. The gift of salvation equips us to live in righteousness. Evil has lost the power to enslave us. Paul the Apostle wrote:
“We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.”
Romans 6:6-8
My dear friend, God did not command us to live according to His Word (in righteousness) to make us miserable. His command is so we can experience love that exceeds our expectations. He frees us from the slavery of sin so we may “reap steadfast love“.
“Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.”
Hosea 10:12
