I was talking to another attorney last week, attempting to reason with him about the resolution of a case. Instead of becoming more reasonable, he became quite surly, and began making threats. I tried to reason with him about the foolishness of his actions which would likely unravel a great result for his client. He just became more ugly. As I felt anger mounting, fear quickly followed. I almost immediately recognized that I was separating myself from the peace of God’s presence. I recalled how God has been teaching me about anxiety being a measure of my distance from Him. I wanted to stay in His presence.
So…I asked God to give me the strength to think like He does.
I repented of my anger. God immediately responded by giving me a look inside the heart of this unhappy man. This man’s god is his money and—he was willing to stoop as low as he needed to in order to satisfy his greed—even if it meant compromising the interests of his own client. Nothing I could say was going to derail his slavish dedication to his god. This revelation radically changed my perspective. HE was in danger—I was not. HE was imprisoned—I was not.
God was using my disagreeable circumstances to give me an opportunity to THINK like HE does!
What a priceless privilege. The Bible teaches us in 1 Peter 1:13-15:
“Therefore gird up the loins of your mind”
[Take control of your mind.]
“Rest your hope FULLY upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ”
[Our greatest hope is not in our own thinking or intelligence but in Jesus and HIS wisdom.]
“As obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.”
[Living a holy life out of our love for Christ is a direct reflection of God’s wisdom at work in us. Pursuing unholy desires makes irrational fools out of us.]
Thus, when God is our greatest desire, we are courageous.
It is living in God’s love and holiness that gives us courage!
God is LOVE and perfect LOVE casts out fear.
(1 John 4:8,18)
The wicked flee when no one pursues, But the righteous are bold as a lion.
(Proverbs 28:1)
When we are secure in our relationship with God, we will pity those who are enslaved by harsh taskmasters—like money. We will pray for them. We will have God’s generous mercy. Think about it—it’s impossible to fear someone for whom you feel compassion. Their plight makes you feel pity, not fear.
In Christ, we have ALREADY overcome—we have NOTHING to fear!
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
I John 4:4
