I can’t count the hours I’ve laid awake at night anxious about my circumstances—work, relationships, money, even…getting to the airport on time! Ugh!!! Do you ever let anxious thoughts keep you up at night? When our seemingly insurmountable circumstances of life become our bedtime companions, we are robbed of the sweet sleep and peace that God has planned for us UNLESS…
…we learn to entrust EVERY part of our life to HIM!
Keep in mind, the first step to trusting God comes by making our spirit alive through receiving the gift of salvation. After we are born again, we must make our relationship with God our top priority. As we build the relationship it becomes natural to surrender 100% of our life to Him. Then we know what we need to know—in order to quit being anxious. We know God!
Knowing God, helps us know—we can turn ALL anxious thoughts over to Him. He gives us His comfort and HIS perspective. Jesus said:
“Therefore I tell you, do NOT be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
(Matthew 6:25-27)
Typically, most of our anxiety-causing thoughts are actually centered on things that matter very little in the scope of eternity. Most of the time it involves our physical comfort or other temporal, non-eternal matters. But Jesus said, “life” is more than what you eat or wear. He was giving us HIS perspective so we could recognize that “life” is about much more than temporal things. He gives us an eternal perspective so we can let go of our anxiety and position ourselves to live in the freedom and power of the Holy Spirit.
God is not anxious; with Him, we aren’t either.
When we live in His Spirit and in obedience to His Word, we gain His perspective. We have a spiritual purpose. Think about this: Are you ever anxious about whether your life is glorifying God? Ummmm…..not so much. According to the Bible, that’s our ultimate God-given purpose, so it should be our greatest concern, right? Or, are you ever anxious about whether you are fulfilling the Great Commission given by Jesus to share the Gospel and disciple people? I’d say if you stacked up my anxiety about these two matters against all the other stuff I’ve been anxious about…well it would be embarrassingly off-balance!
The disproportionate weight of my anxiety about temporal things means only one thing: I’ve made MYSELF and MY comfort the center of my world instead of GOD and HIS glory.
This revelation, as well as my own motivation to get rid of unnecessary anxiety, is drawing me closer to God. I want HIS perspective on finances, sickness, safety, love, success, family, friends, career, and all things that make me anxious. I want those things subjugated to His purpose for me. He promises that we can KNOW that…
“ALL things work together for GOOD to those who LOVE God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8:28
Love God more than you love anything or anyone else, and you will KNOW HE works ALL things for GOOD. Evil can NEVER thwart God’s purpose. He is so powerful, He can turn evil against itself and make it work for good. Our Heavenly Father “knows what [we] need before [we] ask him.” (Matthew 6:8)
We can trust in God’s faithfulness just as surely as we know the sun will rise. When we KNOW Him for who He is, we can TRUST He is working out our life much better than we can. He DOES CARE about our physical and emotional needs! But our temporal needs should be viewed in HIS perspective so they don’t make us anxious. A child should never be anxious about whether his father will supply his next meal, right? We have the best Father and we need not be anxious either. When we love Him, we are secure in HIS love, HIS power, and HIS wisdom. He loves us more than we love ourselves.
When we love God with ALL our heart, soul, and mind He gives us perfect peace.
