God’s Word makes this remarkable promise:
“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.”
Psalms 37:4-5
Do you want to have the GREATEST “desires of your heart?” Do you currently have them? If NOT, do you wonder why you don’t? Have you ever? Well, my friend, perhaps it’s because you have not learned to “delight” in the Lord. I can tell you from experience that there were many years that I had no idea what it meant to “delight” in the Lord. My “christian” life was empty, frustrating, hypocritical, and nearly meaningless. But my merciful and patient Father stuck with me. He helped me learn. He still is. But, Oh wow—how much more He is now giving me ALL the greatest desires of my heart!
Do you know how this miracle happened?
Well, I began to delight in the Lord. This isn’t complicated. We delight in lots of things. We can delight in the beauty of a sunset or the peacefulness of a baby resting in our arms. But the difference is that our delight in the things of this creation doesn’t satisfy us like delighting in the CREATOR who made them. To “delight in the Lord” means:
He is what we think about most.
He is who we need most.
He is what motivates us to do what we do.
We care most about what He cares about.
We long to be near Him.
We long to be like Him.
He is our greatest love and passion of our life.
When we “delight in the Lord” then he purifies our desires. Our deepest desires are no longer the sinful “delights” that once captivated us.
When we delight in the Lord, we have the best that this life has to offer—we are spoiled by HIS presence!
When we have experienced the presence of God, then even our greatest desires for the things of this world—pale in comparison to Him. God gives us everything we never even knew we wanted. This is the EXPERIENCE of living in the fullness of HIS joy.
In God’s presence, we are not saddened by the sin or even the “good” things that we give up; rather, we are captivated by the satisfaction of our deepest desires. Many people live their entire lives never even knowing that kind of satisfaction existed! When we give our whole heart to God and lay everything on the altar, He gives, without a doubt, something so much better. We also know that if what we left on the altar is not returned to us, then it was NEVER—HIS best for us. God loves us more than we love ourselves.
God’s desires to satisfy us with things that are MUCH greater than anything we could ever ask for or imagine!
