Can You Have Too Much Confidence?

Can you have too much confidence? It depends on the object of your confidence! As born-again believers, our inner man is empowered by the Holy Spirit. We are gifted with a supernatural source of confidence that is much greater than ourselves. Our strength and resources do not measure up to God! Unfortunately, our tendency is to lay aside that gift and become MORE confident in our own abilities than we are in God.

So why do we so often choose to live in this lesser source of confidence when we have the power of God at our disposal?

It’s likely because we are ignorant of the power God has given us. You see, when we are born again this does not mean we settle into mere religious practices. Religious rituals do not build confidence in God! Rather, we must discipline ourselves to develop a relationship with God. Through knowing Him, we adopt a confident way of living based on what God has done for us in Christ.

We are human and go through periods of discouragement when our troubles seem almost unbearable. But the resurrection of Jesus provides the key for enduring trials. Our confidence must be based not in ourselves, but in GOD who can raise the dead and empower us to face adversity. Paul the apostle wrote:

“For we do NOT want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should NOT trust in ourselves BUT in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us.

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭8‬-‭10

Paul’s life was at stake!

When the pandemic hit, many of us also experienced the fear of death. But trouble is an opportunity to build confidence in GOD. Before we were born again, we spent our entire life exercising confidence in lesser things. It really doesn’t work out very well. But when we accepted the gift of salvation, we were brought into the ring of God’s power. We now possess the greatest source of confidence! By spending time with God and living in obedience to His Word, we draw closer to Him. We then experience confidence in Him like the Psalmist, who proclaimed:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may rise against me, in THIS [that the Lord is my light and my salvation] I will be confident.

One thing I have desired of the Lord, THAT will I seek: [To] dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord; and to inquire in His temple.

For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.”‭‭

Psalms‬ ‭27‬:‭1‬, ‭3‬-‭6

When God is the center of our life, HE becomes our source of supreme confidence.

To have MORE confidence in anything [money, possessions, career, government] or anyone [spouse, children, friends, parents] other than GOD is—a very dangerous proposition. We are setting ourselves up for failure. It is only God who—NEVER fails. He is omnipresent [present everywhere], omniscient [all-knowing] and omnipotent [all-powerful]. He loves us more than we love us. He has the best plan for our life.

My friend, seek God with all your heart, soul, and mind and discover your greatest source of confidence: You can never have too much confidence in God!

Basic Bible Concepts: Part 9 Spiritual Growth

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when they revile and persecute you and say, all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake, rejoice and be exceeding. Glad for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” ~Matthew 5:10-12
