Why I Don’t Want To Be Someone Else

Quite possibly one of my most self-defeating life habits is—trying to be someone else. The problem is, I’m NOT good at it, and it does NOT give me satisfaction. In fact, it just frustrates me! So WHY do I do it?  And—WHY did I spend most of my life trying so hard to be like that “other girl” whom I believed “had it all?” If you really want to know, it’s because…

…I didn’t like who God made me!

But, what I didn’t know was that before I could love who God made me, I had to…love the God who made me. Otherwise, I was only seeing myself through the lens of my enemies; that is, my flesh, the world, and the devil. My enemies told me that I need to be proud and be more appealing to the world. I need to be thinner, sexier, richer, more talented, more popular, smarter, etc., all to reap the shallow, temporal satisfaction offered by my enemies. But, the Bible says:

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” (I John‬ ‭2:15-17)

When we see ourselves through the eyes of the enemy—we’re NEVER enough!

But when we know God, we begin to see ourselves, as the Psalmist, through the eyes of our loving Creator.

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.” (‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139:14-18‬)

Isn’t it absolutely beautiful to know that God cares so much about how He made you?

If you’re like me, you probably struggle to believe that God really does have such precious and loving thoughts and plans for you. But, don’t settle. Give Him a shot at proving you wrong. I promise you—get to know Him, and you WON’T be disappointed. Since I’ve been pursuing God for about eleven years now, it may shock you to know that—I’d rather be dead—than go back to life without friendship with Him.

Knowing God helped me love who He made me to be.
