When the ‘VID-19 caused me to develop significant brain fog, it was so debilitating that I have been forced to seek remedies outside of traditional medicine. One of the authors I have been reading is Neurobiologist, Dr. Caroline Leaf. Dr. Leaf has spent years helping people trapped in toxic thinking and even—those with severe brain issues like TBI, Dementia, ADHD, etc. One of the most thought provoking observations she makes is—”science is catching up with God’s Word.”
What does this mean?
Well, today many psychologists and counselors who are dealing with people with anxiety and depression, teach them to refocus on positive thoughts. Much of training our brain (which is simply an organ) can be done by how we use our mind (which Dr, Leaf equates with our soul). She calls this retraining “neurocycling,” which in the simplest form, means using positive thoughts to retrain our brain. She makes the observation that we can live 3 weeks without food; 3 days without water, but only 3 seconds without thinking. Between our conscious, subconscious, and unconscious minds—there is never a time we’re not thinking. Also….according to Dr. Leaf, it only takes between 30-90 seconds for a thought to start cutting permanent grooves into our brain. YIKE!
So WHAT are we putting in our mind and HOW is it affecting us?
As to HOW it affects us, the Bible says:
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”
Proverbs 23:7
Dr. Leaf observes that science is catching up to God’s Word—several thousand years after God’s Word was written. Scientists are now observing that we BECOME what we THINK! Thus, we have the power to change who we are—even on a very basic level. This revelation is radically changing my thinking patterns. I don’t know why it took science to prompt this change when I’ve known this verse in Proverbs for many years—Ugh! According to Dr. Leaf, scientific studies have revealed that our thinking patterns can even change our brain’s DNA.
WOWZA!
Change is not that difficult. It just takes discipline. And—if you want to super-charge your mind’s transformation—ask God. So for example, rather than dwelling on a negative event, I list as many positive things about the event [or person] to think about. But to supercharge my mind…which is far MORE powerful than my own positive thoughts, I open…
God’s Word—which is…
“…quick [living] and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12
Let me give you an example:
The other day, I was at a meeting and saw a lady who had deeply betrayed me a couple of months ago. Immediately my thoughts fell into mulling over the deep wrong she had done to me. About 20 seconds into my mind dump, I stopped myself and asked God to give me different thoughts (it was too dark for me to bail myself out). He prompted me to do a search for verses on forgiveness. (openbible.info is great for verse searches by topic.) The first four verses in the search were perfect. I put those in my mind by reading them aloud to myself several times and then I prayed them much like I prayed the verses for the Lord’s Prayer. After 5-6 minutes of prayer…the ugly thoughts were gone.
I had a clear mind and was able to move on with my day in joy and peace.
God’s Word supernaturally transforms our mind.
I am seeing God transform my mind over and over again.
His Word works powerfully.
His Word is truly amazing.
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Romans 12:2
