What Happens When I Pray For God’s Will—But Still Want My Own Will?

Share

God's way on chalk

When I pray to God for “Thy will to be done,” I often do so half-heartedly, because what I REALLY want—is for HIM to do MY will—and give me what I desire. The problem with this kind of praying is I”m cutting myself OUT of the best blessings God has planned because He knows me better than I know myself!

We THINK we KNOW what will satisfy us the MOST; and thus, when OUR DESIRES guide our prayers—we limit our blessings.

How do I know the blessings God desires for me are better than the blessings I desire for myself?

  • I’ve experienced it.
  • Logic tells me that Creation manifests the magnificent creativity, love, wisdom and power of God, AND if He loved me enough to DIE for me, then He certainly has incomprehensibly greater plans for my life than I do.
  • The Bible is full of God’s promises of the goodness He has planned for me.

So, to receive the BEST blessings, we must YIELD our desires to God, “Who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above ALL that we ask or think,” and allow HIM to do miracles “according to the power that works in us.” (Ephesians‬ ‭3:20‬)

Look, God DOES want to give you the desires of your heart—but NOT your desires as defined by your great enemy. God wants your desires to be purified by Him—so they are the best.

How are our most earnest prayers for what we desire purified by God, so we desire what HE desires?

I can tell you what I’ve experienced by applying God’s Word (especially the Lord’s Prayer) to my prayer life. When my prayers begin with thanksgiving and praise, it gives birth to humility. Humility triggers a desire to ask for forgiveness for any trespasses against God’s great love. These three parts of prayer enable my heart to humbly and earnestly desire God’s holy will and—His will becomes as important as my most vital physical needs. Jesus said:

“My FOOD is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.”

John‬ 4‬:34‬

In this mindset, I know l can pray with confidence to God because HE OWNS my heart. He is the great Lover of my soul. When I yield myself to Him—I walk the path of peace and prosperity that He has planned.

“He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.” ‬‬‬

Psalm 25‬:9

Praying God’s will (and meaning it) is a constant battle because—we are so wrapped up in our own immediate physical needs, that when we pray we are mostly thinking of all the things that will make our life more comfortable—better health, more money, etc. Thus, we begin praying with our idea of what we think God’s answer should be. When God closes the door on our desired result, we often look for a way to get around it. And if we kick down the door God closes, we find that what’s in that room doesn’t fill our desire. We can often look back on our life and see God’s blessings in another room—where, all the time, the door was wide open but we were too blinded by our own desires to see it. We need holy desires to be able to see the best blessings of God.

God wants to bless us beyond measure!!!

At the beginning of each day, we must spend time in the Word which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. (Psalm 119: 105) God’s presence enlightens us to live in holiness and enjoy His best blessings.
