I was having my time with God and was overwhelmed at how mentally and emotionally exhausted I was and—it was just Tuesday. I didn’t feel like I had the energy to have time with God before work—much less write a devotional—so I asked God to strengthen me from His Word. He took me to the Psalms 143 and oh, what a powerful balm for my soul. Follow the three distinct movements of this prayer:
The complaint and problems: “Hear my prayer, O Lord, Give ear to my supplications! In Your faithfulness answer me, And in Your righteousness. For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has crushed my life to the ground; he has made me dwell in darkness, like those who have long been dead. Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is distressed.”
Reminder of blessings and need for God: “I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands. I spread out my hands to You; My soul longs for You like a thirsty land.”
Call for help: “Cause me to HEAR Your lovingkindness in the morning, for in You do I trust. Cause me to KNOW the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to You. TEACH me to do Your will, for You are my God; Your Spirit is good. LEAD me in the land of uprightness. REVIVE me, O Lord, for Your name’s sake! For Your righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.”
Psalms 143:1, 3-6, 8, 10-11
As I followed the pattern of praying this Psalm, I:
- complained to God about my problems and told Him exactly how crushed I felt.
- listed His blessings and victories in my life which helped me realize how much I NEED Him—even more than water in the desert!
- asked Him to allow me to:
- HEAR His loving direction,
- KNOW the way I should walk,
- TEACH me to do His will,
- LEAD me to live holy, and
- REVIVE me for His glory.
By the end of praying, God had strengthened me to conquer the day!
God’s Word is so powerful and when we pray it out we KNOW—there isn’t any problem to great for Him!!!
