As born-again believers, we have the HIGHEST calling—but do you ever wonder WHAT that is supposed to look like???
Before we examine what the Bible says, let’s see if HOW WE LIVE is an indication of if we know our HIGH calling. Our enemies, (the devil, the flesh and the world) would say our our best life involves elevating ourselves to become great in the eyes of others. We want to be the greatest lawyer or highest-paid professional athlete. What wouldn’t we give to be voted People Magazine’s sexiest man or most beautiful woman? We want to be the top of our class and get the best job—right?
What you define as success is best gauged by where you spend the majority of your time and resources to become WHO you think you should be—so do the math!
But WHAT does God say about WHO we should be? The Bible says:
“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.”
Ephesians 5:1-2
In the very next verses we are given specific instructions about what it does NOT mean to “walk in love:”
“But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting.”
Ephesians 5:3-4
The enemy is careful to wrap evil in a cloak of good so that we will be foolish and take the low road. For example, our culture justifies fornication and adultery by saying it’s “love;” when it’s just selfishly using another person’s body and soul without having to make a true love-commitment. Or, our culture justifies all kinds of unholy humor and entertainment because our soul is so starved from living on the husks of this world that it is never satisfied so it just sinks lower and lower in its quest to be filled. We constantly crave something better.
We were born for SO much more!
We were created for a relationship with a supernatural being—His name is Jesus. We are born with the instinct to crave the kind of perfect love that only He can give. But, to find Him—we have to come to Him—His way. He is God, the eternal, self-existing One and His ways are written in HIS Word. You will never find the God you so desperately seek by creating a god who conforms to your rules. That god only exists in your mind and it will abuse you until your soul starves to death in slavery.
The one true God is righteous, just, holy, loving and He wanted to reconcile with you so badly that He thought you were worth dying for. He has the love you crave. This One Who gave everything for us, taught us to love as He loves and thus, follow our highest calling. Paul said:
“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:12-14
There is no higher calling in life than to live and love like Christ, the Hero of our heart!
