Creating a “No Worry Zone” Won’t Cure Spiritual Anxiety

Share

worry zone

In a recent news article, a lady described years of relentless anxiety. Finally, she made a simple boundary based upon a recommendation from her therapist called the “6:30 PM rule.” From 6:30 PM until the next morning, worrying was strictly off-limits. At first, it felt impossible, then strangely freeing. Evenings became lighter. Sleep improved. The bully of anxiety seemed quieter—for a while.

The writer celebrated the breakthrough.

And yet, the trouble that caused the anxiety was merely postponing the worry until the next morning. The rule managed the symptom; it never removed the cause.

Physical remedies can never cure spiritual anxiety.

The Bible reveals why human strategies like the 6:30 PM rule are not a cure for anxiety. Just like we were created for relationships with other humans, our soul was also created for an intimate relationship with God. According to God’s Word, we all have an innate sense of His presence (See Romans 1). Like a small child knows he needs his parents, our soul also knows we need a relationship with God. The child is anxious when the parent is absent, and the absence of God produces a desperate thirst that manifests as spiritual anxiety. Before we are born again, that relationship is absent and causes great anxiety—much like a body deprived of water is thirsty. The Psalmist captured our soul’s longing:

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” Psalm 42:1-2

When we are born again, we are made alive in Christ. This event gives us the relationship we’ve been desperately seeking our entire lifes!

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬ ‭

But after we are born again, we must grow and mature in our relationship with Christ because we’re spiritual babies. We’re born onto a raging battlefield. Spiritual warfare is real. Our enemy hates us. He wants us to live in anxiety and never experience the peace that passes understanding that God wants to give us. We must put on the armor of God. We must develop the mind and attitudes of Christ.  Otherwise, we will forget who we are—beloved children adopted by the Father. And we will forget who He is—our Living Water. Our desperate thirst will return. A relationship with Christ is not a one-off experience anymore than one glass of water is enough to help our body survive more than a few days. Jesus said:

“Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:13-14

The 6:30 PM rule is like rationing a single cup of water while standing beside an endless spring. It may keep you from fainting tonight, but tomorrow the thirst is still there because the real need was never met. This fallen world is full of trouble—bills, messy relationships, health, hateful people, wars, economic uncertainty—yes, they will all still be here tomorrow! But God is too. Jesus invites us to walk through the storm with Him:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me… and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-30

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

The cure for spiritual anxiety is found in a deep and abiding relationship with God. He is never anxious. He is our fountain of peace. He is our greatest source of love. He is the only source of true wisdom. My friend, invite Him to sit on the throne in every room of your heart. His reign within us will free us from anxiety and help us to live in peace and deep satisfaction.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for creating me for a relationship with You. Forgive me for trying to manage my anxiety myself with distraction and human tools instead of drinking deeply from Your fountain of Living Water. Today I lay down every human effort. Help me to have Your mind and Your attitudes so I can do Your will and walk in Your ways of peace—despite all the storms! Flood every anxious thought with Your presence until worry has no room left in me. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
