“Give unto the Lord, O you mighty ones, Give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” Psalm 29:1–2
The entire chapter of Psalm 29 is a powerful invitation to worship and praise the Lord—not casually or out of obligation, but with reverence for who He is. David begins by calling on the mighty—perhaps even angelic beings—to give God the glory due His name. As the psalm continues, David focuses on the overwhelming power of God’s voice:
“The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
The God of glory thunders;
The Lord is over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
The voice of the Lord is full of majesty.” Psalm 29:3–4
Our praise must include a deep acknowledgment that God alone has the final word on everything. His voice isn’t fragile or weak; He thunders with purpose. He speaks, and creation obeys—so should we.
“The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars,
Yes, the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes them also skip like a calf,
Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox.”
Psalm 29:5–6
Even the strongest trees and highest mountains tremble at God’s voice. Cedars—symbols of strength and stability—shatter. The earth itself reacts to His Word.
My friend—what we fear—God rules over.
THIS is the powerful God we worship:
“The voice of the Lord divides the flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
The Lord shakes the Wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth,
And strips the forests bare;
And in His temple everyone says, ‘Glory!’”
Psalm 29:7–9
God’s voice brings forth life, commands fire, causes birth, and clears the way. The only right response is, “Glory!”
Then…after all the shaking and splintering, Psalm 29 ends with this beautiful contrast:
“The Lord sat enthroned at the Flood,
And the Lord sits as King forever.
The Lord will give strength to His people;
The Lord will bless His people with peace.”
Psalm 29:10–11
God reigns above the chaos of our lives. He sat enthroned during the Flood—one of the most terrifying moments in human history—and He is still on the throne today. He is not threatened by disaster, fear, or uncertainty. He gives strength and blesses with peace those who worship Him.
When we honor God for who He is, we receive what only He can give—supernatural strength and unshakable peace.
When we praise God, something shifts. Not because God needs our flattery, but because when we are realigned with the truth of who He is—we are in our right mind. Praise reminds us that God:
- Is sovereign over chaos (vv. 3–4)
- Is stronger than our enemies (v. 5)
- Is present in the storms (v. 10)
- Is able to give us peace in the middle of it all (v. 11)
Worship takes our eyes off our mess and points us to the Master.
Are you tired? Praise Him.
Are you anxious? Worship Him.
Prayer:
Lord God, Your voice is mighty, full of majesty, and worthy of awe. You speak, and creation responds. You break down what is proud and lift up those who bow in worship. Today I choose to give You the glory due Your name. Help me to worship You in the beauty of holiness, not just with my words, but with my heart. Remind me that You are enthroned above every storm, and You are the One who gives strength to Your people and blesses us with peace. I receive Your strength today. I rest in Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
