Who Do You Want To Be?

Share

fake or real

Quite possibly one of my most long-standing, self-defeating habits has been trying to be someone else. I wanted to sing like Aretha, look like Cindy, and play volleyball like Kerri. The big problem is, I’m not very good at being anyone else. None of us are. So why do we try?

And why would we want to be a poor imitation of someone else when we can be the perfect original God made us?

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; when I awake, I am still with You.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139:14-18‬

So why did I spend most of my life trying so hard to be like that “other girl” whom I believed “had it all?” Well, honestly, it was because I didn’t know God well enough to get the inside scoop on the unique and wonderful person He made me to be.

But the better I get to know God and the longer I live in His presence, the more I see myself through His eyes and love who He made me.

Make no mistake—this is not about increasing our own self-love. It is about learning to love God and thus better begin to live in our glorious purpose

Unless we see ourselves through the lens of God’s perspective, we will always have a lesser view of ourselves.

And because Jesus made it black and white—we are either for Him or against Him (Matthew 12:30)—if we are not seeing ourselves through His eyes, we are seeing ourselves through the eyes of the enemy. The enemy says I need to be more appealing to the world. I need to be thinner, sexier, richer, more talented, more popular, smarter, etc. For what purpose??? It’s just to reap the shallow, temporal satisfaction offered by our enemies. But, the Bible says:

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John‬ ‭2:15-17

As long as we see ourselves through the eyes of the enemy, we will never BE or HAVE enough! But when we know God, we begin to see ourselves through the eyes of our loving Creator. Isn’t it absolutely tremendous to know that God cares so much that He made only one of you? No one else can be you. God really does have priceless plans for you.

Don’t settle.

I promise you—once you get to know Him, you WON’T be disappointed. Since I’ve been pursuing God for about eleven years now, it may shock you to know that I would rather be dead than go back to life without a strong sense of His presence and friendship in my life. My life is nothing without Him!

Knowing God helped me love ALL He made me to be.
